One of Milton Glaser’s most well-known work is a poster with a headline of “Art is whatever”. The reason I use my drawing talent to pursue graphic design is because I don’t get art (I later found out at TCU that art indeed doesn’t have a specific purpose). Yet, graphic design is different, which is clearly defined as “commercial art”. The further I got into my study, the more I realized that:
In order to be a good designer, half of your brain is understanding the business, and the other is your creative design talent.
anh’s note
Balancing business and design is truly a master in work. That is why I created this series “business in web design”, to help us all appreciate the good work and learn a thing or two about the design business. I can’t think of anything more perfect than this fusion of dynamic: collective of people doing what they genuinely love, impressively and professionally.

Huge, 2024
In a article I found on their job posting, Huge shared “5 reasons why Huge is awesome” in a very short and sweet way.
- Be honest: Don’t afraid to say what you think. Strong team are built on different perspective
- Embrace the unknown: The future is uncertain, but you can be ready for it.
- Take chances: You can’t be right until you know what’s wrong.
- Ideas over egos: Listen to others and save your energy for what matters.
- Give a shit: If you don’t care, why should anyone else?
my analysis
Huge looks cool and successful because:
- Their ever-growing type of service: based on my last post on website history, and the fact that they started as a website and internet marketing agency in the 2000s, Huge already had a very strong foundation. They started their service based on the market need and technology development, website, that they knew would have the potential to impact business and client. As they grow, they continue to shift to product design and now implementing AI to do immersive experience design. However, the core of their service is purposeful large-scale work and brand experience design. They are deeply market and consumer-driven, as shown through their work and their website, with responsive design, professional communicator copy, and short-and-sweet metrics and summary.
- Their work culture: Flexibility, professionalism, and balance are at the core of their global-scale agency, with satellite offices. This is what they stated on their career page: “Creating the best work of your career means being in an environment that invests in you personally as well as professionally. That fits around you. That reflects society. That trusts its people.” They remove the formality of hierarchy and in-person meetings but still keep the professionalism of delivering the most impactful work to the client and the market on time. They prioritize their employees’ growth, wellness, and other commitments in life while working for them with Huge Holiday, Summer Fridays, Minimum Time Off, Take Care Days, Caregiving, and Work Anywhere (LOL I just looked up and their office is a WeWork office). So instead of doing what other businesses normally do, they work in a way that works for each employee, team dynamic, and workload. And as everything half-exists online now, it makes sense to move to working remotely and digitally.
- Their people characteristics: They are the humble alpha expert in their industry and the service they offer. Going through their website in and out, they are incredibly knowledgeable about their client’s industry, problem, and concept they are working with. In my experience, if you do enough research on one thing, you won’t have to do a million random thumbnails and directly come up with the solutions. And the solution has always been the simplest and straight-to-the-point option that gets the customer. One of their rules is “Ideas over ego”, the more people work on one problem with an open attitude, the higher the possibility of having the right idea and getting more work done. At the same time, the entrepreneurial spirit encourages their sensitivity to technology and design growth, and work ethics to offer the best solution to the clients that speaks to the customer.
- Most importantly, they are care, open to change, and do what matters.
stay tuned for the next one!
Thank you for reading my first business in web design analysis! They are so impressive that I feel so minor to be able to analyze it tbh. But I hope you get some good insights! It is truly inspiring when you learn from a good, no-BS, large company. Luck is when opportunity meets preparation. Short and sweet, definitely lean into what you like, pursue the cool thing you are interested in, and don’t be afraid to grow and dive deep into the subject you care about!
